W.P.T.S.A
Encouraging Disability Sport In Wales
About us/Sponsors

The W.P.T.S.A was formed in 1960 in Rookwood Spinal Injuries Hospital to enable spinal injured people to compete in sport at Home countries, International, European, World Championships, Commonwealth and Paralympic level of competition. We've been a registered charity since January 1968.

We now not only encourage spinal injuries to get back involved in sport but all disabilities. The sports our association currently fund and organize are Wheelchair Tennis, Table Tennis for the Disabled, Powerlifting for the Disabled and, Indoor and Lawn Bowls. If the sport your interested in isn't above please don't hesitate to contact us and we'll do the best we can to help you, after all we encourage all disability sports.

Wheelchair Tennis

Cardiff Wheelchair Tennis Club was formed in April 2000 to bring together existing and potential players, coaches and volunteers to establish and promote wheelchair tennis in Cardiff – the primary objective being to provide people with a mobility related disability with the opportunity to play tennis in a safe and proper environment, supervised by qualified wheelchair tennis coaches using specialised wheelchairs and other equipment as may be required.

Anyone with a mobility impairment, such that it makes playing able bodied tennis difficult or impossible, is eligible to play wheelchair tennis – you do not have to be a wheelchair user to be eligible to play the sport.

The Club runs two weekly sessions at the Welsh National Tennis Centre in Cardiff:

Tuesday 11am – 1pm

Thursday 12am – 2pm

Anyone is welcome to come and try the sport and we are always looking for new players.  We will provide a special wheelchair designed specifically for tennis and will give advice and support as necessary.  The first session for any new player will be free after which we charge £6 for a two hour session – juniors (under 18) are free.  Membership to join the Club is £10 a year (again juniors are free).

Table Tennis

The Welsh Paraplegic Tetraplegic Sports Association currently runs a disabled table tennis club three times a week. Twice a week in the Welsh Institute of Sport, Sophia Gardens, Cardiff and once a week in Brecon Leisure Centre, Brecon, Mid-Wales.

The club is set up to encourage disabled people who have an interest in the sport to develop their skills. We invite all levels of compitance from people who've never picked up a bat before to people that may allready be at competition level. The desire of the club is to develop players to be able to compete internationally, then if the attitude and skill level is shown to develop into the GB squad.

The club currently consists of several GB players, including local celebrity Miss Sara Head whom you may have seen in the media of late. Head coach Mr James Munkley currently runs the training sessions, along with other able bodied coaches he brings in for a variation to training.

Training

Mondays & Wednesdays 10am till 3.30pm, Welsh Institute of Sport, Sophia Gardens, Cardiff.

Fridays 12.30 till 3.30pm, Brecon Leisure Centre, Brecon, Mid-Wales.

Please don't hesitate to come along and have a go but could you please contact us first as due to competitions, etc we're not always guaranteed to be there. Please contact myself by e-mail to wptsa@aol.com or by phone on 07896095150.
